Composition & material selection

Expanded PTFE

Expanded PTFE sheet and joint-sealant forms for compliant static sealing. Specify flange condition, compression and the material construction for the joint.

  • Expanded structure rather than dense stock
  • Sheet gaskets and form-in-place sealing formats
  • Compression behavior follows the supplied construction

Choose conformability for the flange

Expanded PTFE has a structure that allows a sealing form to conform to the mating surface under compression. It is considered where the supported joint benefits from a compliant gasket.

Sheet-cut gaskets and form-in-place sealant strips have different installation details. Specify the supplied format and joint geometry rather than combining them under one stock dimension.

Use construction-specific sealing data

Expanded materials differ by density and structure. Their compression and load-retention behavior must come from the supplied product, not a general PTFE property table.

A gasket still relies on the flange and bolting arrangement. Include surface condition, stiffness and the operating cycle when comparing dense PTFE with an expanded construction.

Specific answers

Grade Selection Questions

Can expanded PTFE replace a solid machined bushing?

It is a different structure intended here for compliant sealing. It is not an interchangeable dense machining stock.

Does expanded PTFE mean adhesive-backed tape?

No. Sheet and strip formats differ. Any positioning adhesive must be specified separately from the sealing material.
